Within the EU-funded project tuMaPos, the Berlin company BOGEN Electronic has succeeded in revolutionizing magnetic measuring systems. The new systems are listed under the product name X-class in BOGEN´s product range. With this development, BOGEN Electronic has achieved a genuine innovation for magnetic measuring systems: Concerning accuracy, X-class offers a real alternative for many optical systems. The scales of X-class are written with an extremely small pole pitch of 80 µm. Accuracies of less than 5 µm can be achieved with the corresponding X-class encoder. This accuracy class matches with the accuracy with which many optical measuring systems work.

Magnetic measuring systems generally offer numerous advantages over optical solutions: Measuring systems based on magnet technology are much more robust against environmental influences such as contamination (e.g. by production residues or means of production), vibrations (e.g. due to vibrations of machines), moisture (e.g. due to condensation) and temperature fluctuations. As a result, magnetic measuring systems do not require protection devices as they are required for the use of optical measuring systems. Since magnetic measuring systems work contactless, costs for wearing parts are eliminated. Also the purchase price for magnetic systems is significantly lower than for optical measuring systems.
