This is one of the first mods I’ve done that doesn’t void your warranty! Weird!
Here’s how you make a custom GPU backplate for any graphics card you could ever possibly have. Acrylic is non conductive, if you make your backplate out of metal you’re going to have to make sure it’s grounded so it doesn’t build up static and fry your GPU. Acrylic with plastic spacers has no chance of doing that, which is why it’s a good idea to use it. The acrylic I used was 3mm thick, if you don’t know what to use as a spacer, you could just use thick double sided tape or a small piece of 3mm acrylic with double sided tape if you need more height. I used a thermal pad, you don’t necessarily need to.
The paint I used was rustoleum enamel.
I did some thermal testing with the backplate installed and benchmarking programs running, and the max temp this 970 got to was 78C. This is well within the safe operating range (95C), so don’t worry about this mod making your card too hot.
And yes, 78 is kinda hot but that’s because all EVGA 970 SC cards were manufactured incorrectly which makes them run hotter than other cards and not because of the backplate.
