Does aluminum foil protect you from radiation?

After seeing Japanese people walking across the street holding aluminum foil covered cardboard, we wanted to see if that was effective in reducing radiation they may be receiving from the nuclear disaster.

Sorry if I use the term “tinfoil” when I should more accurately call it aluminum foil.
